Moving Day Made Easy: 6 Things to Do Before the Van Arrives
By Nina of LV Solutions Ltd - Windsor, Berkshire
You’ve booked your removals team and got your completion date - that’s a big step sorted! Now it’s time to get ready for the big day
Here are a few simple tips to help everything run smoothly. These are just a few of the key things to consider before moving day.
Move Only vs Full Packing Service
If you’re packing yourself, start early - it always takes longer than expected, especially once you reach the loft, garage and those cupboards you forgot existed! Just try not to get too distracted by the old school books and photographs.
With our Move Only service, we can provide recycled removal boxes at no extra cost and collect them once you’ve unpacked, so they can be used again.
For your own packing, keep heavy items such as books in smaller boxes, avoid overfilling and clearly label each box with its destination room. Mark anything fragile so our team knows to take extra care.
Prefer to leave the packing to us? Our Full Packing Service can cover your whole home or just selected rooms and items. We supply everything needed and usually arrange packing a day or two before the move, depending on the size of your move.
Make Sure There’s Parking & Easy Access
Before moving day, make sure your removal team has somewhere suitable to park as close to the property as possible. If parking is restricted, you may need to apply for a council permit, ask neighbours to leave some space or reserve the area with wheelie bins and a polite note.
It’s also important to tell your removals team about anything that could make access difficult, such as narrow roads, restricted parking, gates, height restrictions or awkward entrances. This is usually discussed at our initial site survey visit.
We’re used to dealing with all sorts of tricky access, from narrow roads to school zig-zag markings and the occasional “you definitely can’t park there” situation!
Allow Some Flexibility for Key Collection
If you’re buying your new home, there can sometimes be a wait between leaving your old property and getting the keys to the new one.
Completion doesn’t always happen as quickly as everyone hopes, so it’s worth checking your removal company’s arrangements for key waits before moving day.
Keep a Small Bag With You
Before the van is loaded, keep valuables, important documents and anything you’ll need during the day with you. A small essentials bag with chargers, medication, toiletries, snacks, drinks and a change of clothes is ideal. Don’t forget any essentials for children or pets - once the van is loaded, finding that phone charger can become surprisingly difficult!
Get Appliances Ready
If you’re taking your fridge or freezer, make sure it has been emptied and defrosted before moving day.
Washing machines and other appliances should also be disconnected and ready to move, unless this has been arranged with your removal team.
One Last Check Before You Leave
Once everything has been loaded, take a final walk around your old home to make sure nothing is left behind.
After that, it’s time to hand over the keys and start the next chapter.
